The Sneaker Game Got Me!

I’ve never been one to follow the crowd and when it comes to fashion. I’ve always preferred to stand out. The sneaker game was really hot when I was in high school, especially Jordan’s (not just the 1’s either), and I was that girl who would not be caught dead in a pair. It just wasn’t my thing. Not only that, but my mom refused to spend that kind of money on a shoe for me while my feet were still growing. I actually remember getting made fun of for my quite unique outfit choices. While I initially had FOMO, it wasn’t long before I thrived in my differences.

I suppose that’s why when the Jordan 1 Retro’s started making a comeback (for some it never left), gaining mainstream popularity again, I completely overlooked them. Everybody wanted them so I decided I didn’t. That is until the pair that got away showed its face in the old but new colorway. See, as I said before, I wasn’t really the girl that wanted Jordan’s but there was this one pair... the ONLY pair that ever changed my mind. The Jordan 1 Retro in Black and Gold Patent. I wanted them so bad but not only were they hard to get, my mother said NO and that was that. I never saw them again,. It wasn't until a few weeks ago when I discovered they’d been re-released. But in my search, I also saw the patent red and black colorway which was due to be released a few weeks later. Was this redemption? I saw it that way.

Little did I know the sneaker game had changed and people went to GREAT lengths to get the colorway of their dreams. I signed up for every app out there and put myself in every draw available just to secure them. I lost at least 2 good hours of sleep the day of the release just waiting to see if I could get them. I learned a shocking lesson that day… Designer Collabs and releases have NOTHING on the sneaker game! Lol, and I failed miserably at trying to get them. Luckily, I had gone in search of the original patent black and golds and bought them resale and although the price was higher I could live with it. However, that nagging feeling hit me again and I knew the red and black patent Bred’s would haunt me. So, I bought those too. Resale and at an extortionate price at that, but at this point, I had to charge it to the game. As I sit here staring at 2 highly sought-after shoes I finally get it. The rush is unmatched.

At this stage in my life, sneakers make more sense than heels and I’m not mad at it. I know I’m sucked in because I’m now on a constant lookout for the next color and the next release date. Lord knows I don’t need another expensive habit but as I said before, at this point I just have to charge it to the game…

Sincerely, A Baby Sneaker Head.
